Report damns ‘toxic’ Australian swimming culture

An independent review prepared for Swimming Australia has labelled national swimming culture “toxic” due to a failure in leadership, bullying and prescription drug abuse in the 2012 London Olympics.

No collective action was taken by coaches, management or swimmers against any of the unruly behaviour set to be in breach of the team agreement and sanctionable by the Australian Olympic Committee.

This behaviour resulted in a very lonely experience for many of the team, the report said.

CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, Simon Hollingsworth said “this report is a clear message to Swimming Australia to continue its reforms to enable it to return to the top table of international swimming.”
